Practice Essay from extract 24

In every piece of film, whether it's just a scene or a movie in its entirety, has a vision from the author behind it. A theme if you will. Including the extract entitled “24”. The theme of this extract is all pertaining to the idea of building suspense and tension. There is extreme tight tension that is obvious between the two main characters that is shown throughout these few minutes in numerous ways through numerous techniques. The creator of this sequence was really trying to convey those two feelings and how it affects the two characters action’s in order to get what they want over to the audience. Which was accomplished through camera angles/movements, editing, sound used, and mis-en-scene.
This feel of suspense and tension starts off in the very beginning of this extract. It commences with a shot reverse shot of the main man and woman in the interrogation room where they are both enclosed in. Within these few seconds the audience can see the characters facial expressions and body language toward one another as soon as they’re in contact. They seem uneasy and anxious with each other creating an overall tense mood. During these first few shots and multiple other occasions, there is also incidental music playing in the background, this was used to give off an apprehensive feeling to the scene as the music rises with build of suspension that is created. Not only that but the dialogue being spoken between the man and woman all throughout the extract whether it be the low quiet conversations at the starting point or higher-level screams later on, adds to the uncertainty of what will happen next, we don’t know which one of them will take lead control, which enhances the manufacturing of suspense in this film. The establishment of suspense is also subtly made through small camera movements like a zoom. In the first 45 seconds after the man has walked into the room his head turns to face the clock on the wall and it then zooms into the image of the clock ticking the time away. The awareness of their crucial time getting more and more limited is stressful to them and contributes to the anxiety the characters are experiencing during this time.
Evidently, both are in a tense environment with a great deal of suspense that is gradually rising, which leads to the man snapping out of frustration. The audiences see this through an action match that leads into a two shot. The man, who at this point stands a few away from the woman, throws the desk separating them aggressively to the side showing how he reacts in this sort of situation while the woman had remained overall calm yet still uneasy. This brings them into a two shot where the man intensely screams in the women's face demanding his wants. This again, shows their tense interactions with each other that could cause the viewers to be startled and experience even more suspension since the scene just drastically escalated. Following shortly after this, the digetic sound of the furniture in the room screeching adds intensity to the scene and could symbolize the suspense being built because it is one alarming thing happening after another. What could be considered the most alarming action of all is displayed next through a high angle of the man strangling the woman which shows that after the elongated time spent of being through high tension causes him to attack her in order to assert his dominance and the high angle could be used to demonstrate his current power over her.
Immediately after this happens a split screen is utilized. The split screen shows two other worker’s reaction to the man’s attack while they had been observing the two main characters conversation through live security camera footage. The audience being able to see their actions during this time of peak suspense adds to their concern or jitter levels which assists the viewers into recognizing all of the suspense that has been building up the whole time. Indirect approaches surrounding mis-en-scene were also incorporated to develop the theme. Lighting for instance in the beginning, middle, and end was dark, unclear, and low, adding to the uncertainty of the predicament the characters are in and emphasizes the fact that it is unknown what is to come next. The selection of characters is a part of bringing the creator’s vision to life in this extract. Only two characters, the man and woman, are primarily focused on during the whole piece, they are the ones who show the tension and build the suspense in the scene from the way they speak, move, and act.
All in all, the theme or meaning behind the extract 24 is the buildup of tension and suspense between the two main characters. This is exemplified through quite a few ways. The combined production of camera shots, movements, angles, editing strategies, and sound all make up to fit this theme and accentuate it to the audience.

CCR Movie

Hello! This is my creative critical reflection for my AICE Media Movie where I discuss the convetions of movie, social issues that are represented, the evolution of my production skills, how I would plan to distribute my movie, the software's I used, and more!

Progress: 3rd Project Movie

Hello! This is the 3rd and final project that my group and I have done. This was originally going to be our final task for our Cambridge Exam. This was by far our biggest project that required the most work. We took a lot of time to plan and our storyboard skills greatly improved. Our planning skills also advanced, it took a lot more thought to pull this off. I also improved in my acting skills in order to portray my character and my character’s emotions to help tell the story. I think my overall directing skills improved from just more experience. This movie that we entitled, Signed The Watcher, was extremely fun to make and I’m very happy to finally have this finished product.

Progress: 2nd Project Music Video

Hello! This was the second project that my group and I did. It was our music video. We had the freedom to chose any song that we wanted to. We chose Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani. I helped plan, act, direct, and I edited this project. My overall production skills majorly improved from the last project. My team and I learned to incorporate more camera angles and shots. Along with that we learned to put in music into our video. This project was a lot bigger than our last and required a lot more planning and we learned a lot from this experience.

Progress : 1st project Commercial

Hello! This is the beginning of me posting my progress throughout my year thus far in AICE Media .
The first project that my group and I did was a commercial. We had to pick from a list of companies to do it for and we chose Mcdoanlds. This was definitely a new experimenxe for me. It was the first time I’ve ever written a script and storyboarded. I acted in this as a McDonald’s customer along with Ava who played the mascot. For a first project I think it turned out well and looked like an actual commercial. I’m pretty satisfied with our first work.

Re-shoot Movie Experience

Hello! My group and I's movie project entitled, Signed the Watcher, has come along quite nicely. It's definitely been a process, a part of that process is re-shooting. This step is very common in the real movie industry so its no surprise that this is a step my group has gone through. We've experienced this when we made our music video so I wasn't too worried about it. As a group we collectively looked through our footage and pointed out what was working and what just wasn't. Which thankfully, wasn't much. We all pretty much agreed on what scenes or parts needed to be re-shot and then began to think about how we were going accomplish this, considering the global pandemic going on and all of the limitations that come with that. Thankfully the scenes that needed to be redone were at Ava and Morgan's house, so that is already two people in our group always accessible to help fix up those bits and pieces. We were even more lucky because Jake actually works somewhere just right down the street from Ava and Morgan. So one day after work, he walked over to help re-film. He made sure to bring the same clothing he did when we originally filmed and so did Ava and Morgan. I was on the phone with my group while this was happening to help guide and give ideas since I couldn't be there in person. Just like any other filming day, they did multiple takes. Those takes would then be watched over. Not too long later we were all satisfied with the footage that we got. I think we were all very relieved to have gotten this done. Considering at the time we re-shooted we did not know whether or not our final task was going to handed in or not, there was so much uncertainty because of the corona virus. But nonetheless we got it done and could now begin re-editing and finally have our finished movie.

Update on my movie "Signed the Watcher"

Hello! This past month or so has been a challenge in many more ways than one. This COVID-19 ordeal is something that is very unique and unfamiliar to us all. Everyone is trying their best to manage the situation and keep up with their responsibilities, including myself. What is being asked of my group and I as of right  now is different than what we originally planning on, which is no surprise considering the overall drastic changes in our lives right now because of corona. We no longer will be taking our AICE Media exam. Meaning, we still need another way to earn and prove we are worthy of the credit. I have a plan as to what i will be doing for that. I will be uploading all of my projects, my commercial, music video, and finished movie to show my progress throughout the year. I'll take some time to talk about each one and discuss different aspects I improved in. Additionally to doing that, I will still be filming my CCR reflection to discuss my process and my journey. This will be around 10-15 minutes long and will be shot interview/talk show style. All of these will be accessible through my blogs. This definitely isn't the traditional way of going through and finishing AICE Media but we certainly aren't under traditional circumstances. But considering everything, I think my group and I have been doing a wonderful job with keeping up. Also with making sure to blog about our journey and get done what we need to get done. We've been communicating as well. Which is very important for such a huge group project. Even though we don’t have the test at the end of the year we still want to show much we’ve done and grown.

Editing, editing , more editing

Hello! A lot has been happening in the world and has stirred up mass chaos in just about every realm of everyone's life. However, it has not stopped my media journey. For the majority of the time my group and I since this pandemic broke out have been separated and unable to do much for our movie project. I started off editing our movie from scratch right after we were done filming. However due to my limited resources for the editing software it wasn't as good as we would like it to be. I've explained all of this more in depth in previous blogs. We wanted to switch up the fonts to add to scary/ creepy effect we were trying to provoke. The ones I had originally put in just weren't doing in for us. Thankfully, my team member Jake stepped up to the plate and helped us out immensely. He texted me about a online editing website that he found and decided to try it out. In order to make it work and make sure nothing was too choppy he cut out some unnecessary scenes. Some of these include my character, Bella checking multiple rooms in depth in search for Amelia. Or longer cuts of Hannah and Thomas arguing. But even without those scenes the movie still flows and makes sense.Jake also edited our titles. They are now this very bold creepy font in red. The rest are red with black borders. He also changed the music that we had. He added in a suspenseful music to parts that we had before but this song is more intense than the last. I'm overall very happy with how it turned out and think we as a group have created a very professional looking two minute movie opener.
