Editing Blog

Hello ! Last class as you know from my last blog my group and I filmed our commercial for Mcdoanlds. We have all of our footage completed and dumped in our folder on our school computer desktop. Our teacher has given us the opportunity to film some more today if needed but thankfully our group doesn’t need to. It was time for us to edit our commercial. We walked into class and got together at our computer and used Jake’s account to log in since his was the one we used when we transferred our footage. We logged in and our content was there but then there was a problem we came across. Pinnacle studios wasn’t popping up on our computer. We looked on the desktop it wasn’t there and we searched it up on the computer search bar and it wasn’t there. So we called over our teacher and explained to her what happened. She responded with that we can either just do our blog on editing without actually starting and talk about our experience or try it on another computer.
We decided on the second option. We went on another computer to check for Pinnacle Studios but unfortunately it wasn’t on there either. Then we found another computer and logged in and hoped Pinnacle Studios was on it so that we could finally start editing. The computer did have it so I went back to our old computer to put our footage on a flash drive and transfer it to the new computer. After we inserted the flash drive we went to click on our folder but a message popped up saying it was unavailable. I called over my teacher again and showed her. She looked at it and said none of the computers in the room had a working Pinnacle Studios. My group and I were disappointed that we couldn’t start editing today but we knew there wasn’t much that we could do. So then we safely ejected the flash drive to ensure our footage is safe. Then my group an I walked back to our desk and opened up google blogger.
Today my group still took this time to communicate our ideas about editing. We discussed each part of our commercial and talked about different editing elements we could incorporate. Each of us had some pretty good ideas. Such as what text and inserts we could use. We all think that once our commercial is edited it’s going to look very cool and professional. I’m excited to start editing next class or whenever it will be available. Filming was so much fun to do and I think editing will also be a lot of fun for this project and especially in future projects like our music video we are going to do. We have already revived a detailed lesson on how to operate Pinnacle Studios and we already have a clear idea of what we want to do so our editing day should run smoothly. The editing process should be interesting to see our all of our ideas come together. I’m so excited for the finished product.

Filming Day

Hey! Today was our filming day for our commercial for media. We only had 1 class period to film everything and get back to class in enough time to dump everything in our folder on our computer to edit during next class. I was nervous about getting everything done in time and completing what we need but my group and I actually did very well on time management. Our story board was also very specific and detailed so it really helped our filming run smoothly. We had a very clear vision of what we wanted ours to look like and even brought special props like a Mcdoanlds happy meal and Ronald McDonald costume to make it resemble a real commercial as much as possible. My teachers were very excited when they saw how much effort we put into our commercial. Overall I had a really good time filming. I thought it was a great experience and practice for future projects in that class. I cant wait to see how it comes together.
When class began be checked out all of our equipment, the camera, sd card, and tripod. Then I helped Ava put on her clown face makeup, after we had everything set up my group and I carried all of our stuff down to the senior patio where we planned to film and it ended up being the perfect place to film with no issues. We took shots that went along with our story board and took each of them 3 times to be safe. Then we watched them back to make sure the timing was what we needed and checked to see if we needed any changes. For the most part we sticked to our storyboard plan and throughout filming my group and I shared ideas as to what would be best to do. For instance in our 4th box we had planned to do the whole 6 seconds with an over the shoulder shot but then we decided it would be better if we first shot me and my reaction to Ava as Ronald coming in and then we shot an over the shoulder shot. And for our last 6 seconds we had planned just me being in the shot to say the slogan but then we decided it would look better if both Ava and I were in it together. At that moment we also came up with the idea to put the jingle tune in the background. I acted the whole time and Ava did as well while Morgan and Jake worked with the camera and directing. We all worked really well together.
After the filming was done we sat down and went through all of our footage. We made sure we had at least one video for every box that was perfect. Then we looked and checked to make sure the timing matched up to what we needed. Thankfully we didn’t have to much reshooting. Afterwards we packed up all of our stuff and headed back to the room. Ava and I went to wash off her face makeup and Jake and Morgan went to the room to return our equipment. When we were all back together we got our sd card reader and took that with our sd card and put it into the computer. And just like Ms. M told us we made a folder for our group and highlighted all of our footage and dumped it into our folder and checked to make sure it was there. Then we were done. I was super content with how our project was going so far, I feel like we did a really good job and editing it is going to be fun.

Storyboard

Hello! This is my group and I’s storyboard for our Mcdoanlds commercial. Each box represents a plan of 6 seconds of our commercial. In the first box we plan to shoot using a tilt up shot to introduce Alex into the frame and she will be sitting alone with a sad expression on her face with sad tone music playing in the background. The next box we plan to zoom in and have a close up on Alex and she will say that she is having the worst day and then reach into her lunch box/backpack to get some food and realize that she doesn’t have any. Then in the next box it will be a medium shot where Avalon as Ronald McDonald comes in holding a Mcdoanlds happy meal and saids to Alex “I know what you need.. a Mcdoanlds happy meal!” Then in the 4th box Alex will have a happy smiley expression on her face and has the Mcdoanlds in front of her and saids “Oh my gosh, this is just what I needed” and during this time we will also being using an over the shoulder shot that goes into an eye level two person shot. Then the last box and last 6 seconds will be a long shot with an insert of the Mcodnalds logo Alex smiling with her Mcodnalds walking up to camera and the Mcdoanlds tune will be playing in the background and she will say the slogan “I’m loving it!”

Editing Lesson

Hey everyone ! Today in media we got a lesson on how to use cameras, dump footage, and import them into our computers using Pinnacle Studios to edit and create our movies. My teacher gave us some quick directions when checking out cameras and SD cards, we all have sign out sheets that we need to use and in them we fill out the equipment information and bring it back into our class folder that way no camera, tripod, or SD is lost. And also a reminder about putting everyone in my groups name on our media hallway pass for safety percaustions. I also received a lesson on how to work the camera. To charge the camera there is a U shaped slot next to the hand grip and that is where you put in the charger but it is important to make sure the camera is closed otherwise it will not charge. The SD card needs to be put in the SD door slot and to start and stop the camera or do a take, push the red button.
Then I was given a lesson on dumping. Dumping is when you take footage from the camera and put it onto the computer you are using to edit. In this class we will be using the program Pinnacle Studios to edit. So to start off, one person in our group will log on to Pinnacle Studios and it will always be that same persons log in info that we will use. We will do that to make sure we always have all of our updated work each time we log in. Take the SD card and put it in the USB port of your computer and then create a folder on your desktop for your footage. It is very important to create a folder so that all of your footage is secure in one place. Then you want to move all of your footage into your folder. Check in the DCIM folder of your folder to make sure all the correct footage and correct dates are there. If you can’t find it you might need to check in the private section and go to AVCHD and go into stream and in there should be everything on the SD card. Then to import you click important and the plus sign and look for your folder. Always import all of your footage and click start import and whichever piece of footage you want to use/ work on should have a orange box around it.
To begin editing you click the edit button and all of your raw footage should appear at the top of the screen. You can then click on the videos and drag them to down to cut and edit as you please. You can build your footage onto the AD track 2, the title is on top, then the footage, and then audio on bottom. To cut footage you move the mouse to right before you want to cut it then click the razor blade icon to split the footage and then delete the part you don’t want. To add transitions, you need to right click on the your footage and open effects editor and go to the transitions tab and up will pop different effects like light changing or screen changes like a split screen. You can also add texts and titles to your footage too and change the font and how the texts appear, it’s important to layer it and click OK and wait for it to load. To add music you follow the same instructions to import just make sure the music is saved as an MP3 in your folder. When you are finally finished editing and want to save and export you must go to export and go to settings and go to MP4 and click on best quality in the drop down tab and click start export and save as in your desktop folder and before you shut down Pinnacle Studios check to make sure your edited footage saved. This lesson was super helpful to me and was definitely needed becuase my group and I will soon be editing our own footage for our commercial.

Planning

Hello it is October 10th and today my group and I are starting our planning for our commercial! In the planning process we are going to be looking at and discussing what locations to film at and why, any back up locations incase  the ones we originally picked out won’t be available, the costumes we will be wearing, and the props that will be included in the scene. It’s important to us that we have all of this information planned out prior to filming that way when it is time for us to film we know exactly what needs to get done and we can efficiently create our commercial.
   Props
•McDonald’s McNuggets, fries, and drink
•Backpack with notebooks and pencils
•Balloons
  Costumes
•Clown costume for McDonald’s mascot: red nose , face paint, Afro wig. Regular school clothes for other subject in scene
  Schedule
• 10/10 - Planning
• 10/14 - Storyboard blog
• 10/21 Filming blog
• 10/23 Editing Blog
We will probably film on the 18th of October but we aren’t positive yet and once we are done filming  we will immediately begin editing.
  Location list
• Senior patio (This will be our main location, we think it would be wise to film all in one location to limit confusion to viewer, Alex, will be  sitting down at one of the tables at the senior patio acting sad and then the clown will come into the shot giving me the Mcdoanlds meal)
  Back up plans
• Location back up will be our school’s crop circle, it will be a good enough resemblance to a table/ sitting area, if it’s raining we will film by the media center staircase where it is covered but we can still use the steps to sit and set our props.

Research blog: Commercial Conventions

Hey everyone ! We are starting our first big project in media today, we have to create a commercial about a company from a list given to us, and we chose McDonald’s. We chose Mcdoanlds becuase we thought that it would be a fun commercial to make and we had many great ideas of what we could do and were immediately inspired. We’ve already started doing some brain storming on different scene ideas we can do and act out.
Some conventional or common codes that would be in a McDonald’s commercial would be a very positive connotation towards the audience. The symbolic codes is usually set in a McDonald’s restaurant with bright coloring and there is typically kids involved and the mascot for Mcdoanlds, Ronald McDonald. For technical codes, the lighting is bright with cheerful audio and their signature tune and the editing is used to appeal to the projected audience to persuade them to buy their products. Some written codes in a Mcondalds commercial is their slogan : I’m loving it!
Our group consists of 4 people, Jake, Avalon, Morgan, and myself. We all plan on equally contributing into this project to make it the best it possibly can and using effective communion skills to communicate our differing ideas and thoughts about the project. We’re so excited to be starting up our first film on the year and we all think it’s going to be super entertaining to make, edit, and watch.

Introductory

Hi my name is Alexandra but I go by Alex. I'm in 10th grade. I am taking AICE Media Studies this year and I am extremely excited to be taking this course because I am interested in entering the entertainment industry when I'm older and I feel like this class will be a great start into gaining knowledge about films. This year I am also taking AICE Psychology and AICE English to get my credits for my AICE Diploma. So far this year I've been successful in keeping on top of my work and hopefully that continues as the year goes on and I keep my straight A's.
I also play two varsity sports, in the fall from August to November I swim and from January to May I play water polo. I am on both my school's aquatic teams. We are in the middle of swim season and yesterday we had BCAA's and our boys team took home 2nd place. I am super excited for water polo season to start, to me that sport is so much fun and I've made so many great friends from it. I also love to take videos and edit them with my friends and to go the beach.
As far as the future goes I don't have a set plan as to what I want to do or where I want to go but I don't really think anyone my age does. All I really know is that whatever I end up doing I want it to make me happy and I want to enjoy going to work. For the past couple years the film/music industry has been an interest to me, I think what people do in that field are super cool, especially editors and directors. I think I want to go to school out in California maybe USC or UCLA those would be my dream schools but they are super hard to get into but I'm going to work as hard as I can in high school to get into a good college.
